occupied Palestinian territory: Foreign ministry donates aid to Palestinian election

The upcoming Palestinian election sees the foreign ministry allocating money to bolster democratic initiatives and encourage Palestinians to cast their ballots

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that it is allocating approximately DKK 7 million (EUR 930,000) to support democratic efforts in the Palestinian parliamentary elections in January, said sources in the Danish representation in Ramallah.

An agreement with media network Maan to sponsor a campaign encouraging people to vote was among the projects. Roughly DKK 568,000 (EUR 60,000) was earmarked for the project, which includes radio and television spots and debate programmes. The money will also be used to ensure that the media cover the election.

Funds will be sent to the Palestinian Election Commission as well as supporting a grassroots project designed to get women voters to the polls and to support female candidates.

The projects are just one of many Danish projects intended to help the fledgling democracy. The election is seen by many as a showdown between radical Islamists in Hamas and the Fatah Party, which is currently led by Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas.

Denmark also plans to send 10 election observers as part of the EU's group of 172 observers.
